Passions self-titled album has been a long awaited release for me. There’s been a plethora of new music that reinterprets various movements under the Goth umbrella, but very few acts have so perfectly channeled and built upon the elements of my favorite movements in the 80’s underground as Passions has.

The influences are easy to recognize in Passions’ work. While some may want to bring various industrial acts to light, I feel such parallels don’t truly touch on what this album says to me. One could say there may be elements of Nitzer Ebb or even Cabaret Voltaire in here but the emotion in the music far exceeds the atmosphere surrounding those acts. That’s exactly what Passions says to me, “emotion” in a time where music seems to utterly lack romance and the pleasure of pain.

For many of us, Peter Hook’s bass lines, Ian Curtis’ ballads of lost hope, and Andrew Eldrich’s baritone forewarnings on heart ache drew us into a world of melancholy and angst. Joy Division, The Sisters of Mercy, and New Order; it seems these are where the primary influences in Passions’ work lay. Being that these acts resonate quite strongly for me in terms of sentiment, I couldn’t ask for anything better when rehashing older music to create something new. I digress though, Passions is more than a trip down memory lane. As a long time producer focusing on various genres within the realm of dance music we hear Passions meld modern elements perfectly with that of the old. Dubstep’s atmospheric space and Electro’s movement and distortion all reside in this album, thus making it an easy translation from a pleasurable listen to dance floor burner.

This album lacks little for me, in fact it encapsulates every aspect of what I’ve hoped modern music would become. I implore even the most casual listener to go buy it.

I've tried to avoid long winded posts on here in hopes that what I'm choosing to share with all of you will simply speak for itself. Regardless, I've felt the need to make brief mention of a night I help curate and also DJ at called "Black Fridays".

Throughout the past couple years I began to let older music dominate my sets. I was letting post-punk and various 80's genres become an integral part of what people would expect from booking me. In all honestly I didn't see much of a fan base for it in Dallas yet, but simply felt the need to play music that spoke more to my person and interests. Notably I made a sacrifice in easy gigs and easy money because of this. Dallas hasn't struck me as city of mature tastes as I've aged. At least it seems that way in a night life that is ever filled by younger listeners who have little interest in what they're listening to. Be that as it may, Sean Humphrey who happens to DJ under the moniker "Redsean" and also performs with the act "Sydney Confirm" had approached me with the idea of taking part in a Goth themed night. I was pleasantly surprised that my direction in current tastes was coming to be appreciated by a broader spectrum of people.

Black Friday is a "Goth" night yes. Goth in the sense that we play almost every form of music that falls under that umbrella term. For me and I think for many, the Goth subculture simply became the look and contingency of people that embraced the ingenious, genuine, and notably underground movements of the 80's. Modern Industrial is not "Goth" to me nor is Marilyn Manson or White Zombie. I've never even felt the need to make that distinction nor will you ever hear me play it. I think it's safe to say that the collective DJ's in our night all share an appreciation and same outlook on the sometimes criminally overlooked sounds of the 80's underground. Whether that be classified as post punk, synthpop, darkwave, coldwave, ebm, goth rock etc.

So in short, Goth night yes. Goth as you've come to expect it, hopefully not.

Allow me to indulge in my neo-classical appreciation for a bit. The song below is taken off a compilation simply titled "Unreleased". While this is Vol. III in the series, every one to seems to showcase music from various French Coldwave acts. This beautiful little number spans the gap between the rising popularity of neo-classical at this point and the definitive Coldwave elements I seem to just never grow tired of. The juxtaposition between what sounds like a romantic era piano piece and Cure-esque strings is just lovely.

A friend has been trying to turn me onto darker psych lately. I've always been a fan of The Velvet Underground but his taste extends further into such territory. I consider myself pretty anti counter-culture so the depraved movements of heroin and bondage inspired psychadelia I can dig on. This has prompted me to revisit Love and Rockets quite a bit lately. I'm also leaving all of you with some music by a relatively new band named "Singapore Sling"(pictured above).

I've been on hiatus, sorry. Well it's October, that means I can come out of my cave after hiding from the misery of a 100 degree summer. Yes, I'm one of those freaks that revels in the oncoming of Halloween like it's Christmas. Draped in black or no, I've always been that way. I'm spending a great deal of time lurking down the aisles of local stores looking through decorations. My interior decor will probably consist of nothing but cheap skulls and fake gravestones by the end of the month.

Anyways Music, Fashion, and the occasional book and film are still the name of the game for Dead and Re-Buried, so here's some recent purchases, wants, inspiration, and going ons.

A Place to Bury Stranges-She Dies

The Big Pink have come shining through from one of my favorite labels of all time, 4AD. They've given us acts such as Cocteau Twins, Bauhaus, The Pixies, and have done a good job of remaining quite pertinent throughout the years. The Big Pink goes the way of more current trends in music by incorporating recognizable electronic sounds and what is generally a normal vocal styling these days. Granted these guys tend to be a bit moodier and just far more listenable and original than a lot of big acts throughout the past year. They're definitely showing a lot of promise.

I pretty much thought Cure covers just had to stop a long time ago, but low and behold these guys have given the cover game some saving grace.

First off I have to credit Tommyboy for having the first blog to pick up on this act. Secondly, Tommy holds a lot of talent and you can credit him for the visual genius in the above video.

Tense is a Texas act hailing out of Houston. Yes, I was surprised too because these guys are churning out some amazing EBM(Electronic Body Music) or what most of you would know as Industrial. Think early Ministry or A Split Second. The drums, synths, and vocal stylings harken back to a much colder age of early to mid 80's club music. This was the "Goth" of Kraftwerk fans and those prone to the brutal dances and rhythms of what seems like music encased in steel. That being said, you will find subtle hints of romanticism in such music or what seems like some slight remnant of 80's New-Wave.

Current Inspiration and Trappings

I've been keeping a lot of early Dead Can Dance in rotation lately. If you start with their self titled first album(which I recommend) you'll most likely be able to catch onto the influences and trappings of Joy Division influenced post-punk. I digress though, Dead Can Dance far exceeds the limitations of Peter Hook and co. You'll find neo-classical/neo-folk elements thrown in with banshee like wailing that could be fueled by nothing but emotional anguish.

This Lina Osterman Fall 09 collection is perfect. I've been doing the shredded shirt thing for a bit and they've remained essential pieces to my wardrobe. I'll tend to accompany mine with a leather harness or jacket.

The rest of this editorial is fantastic. Batcave or oldschool goth is channeled perfectly. I've been seeing a lot of this in the fashion world and I'm more than happy with it. Goth's early years remains one of my favorite periods for fashion and music(if you couldn't tell already).

30 Days of Night is a fantastic horror comic read. Never mind the movie if you've seen it, the actual comics themselves portray the intense violence and bleak atmosphere surrounding the stories far better. One installment entitled "Red Snow" stands out as a fun read for people fascinated by Nazis and Communists. Imagine bloodsucking comrades and barbaric, genocidal SS commanders.

I was interviewed about skinny jeans for the Wall Street Journal while in NY as well. The video is pretty fucking hilarious. I have the Siouxsie tee on obviously:

So I've been on an very extended vacation in New York catching up with friends and hunting for fellow creatures who share a general distain for sunlight and color. Apologies that the blog hasn't been kicking into full gear but I'll leave you all with some random links and musings.

New York goths seem to have a bit more taste in regards to their music and attire if you know what I mean. Highly recommended if you'd like a foray into early Industrial and EBM. Think Ministry's album "Twitch" and quite obscure stuff. You'll see a mixture in ages and demographics at this place. It's quite refreshing.

Also bringing to mind that if you are in the New York area I'll be playing an industrial and goth set this sunday in Brooklyn.

I will always love New York's honoring of the old world. Gothic cathedrals still pierce the sky like mighty reminders of the Christian god's giant phallus.

The Smell of Print and Death

I've pretty much given into my inner nerd the last year. I think it was a long fueled obsession with Joseph Campbell's interpretation of mythology and Jungian concepts, or a heart felt passion for the power of symbolism, archetypes, and the shadowy richness of the occult and magick. I crave these stories like I crave food or water. Stories are what sustain us, what shape us, what bring us to terms with and further our understanding of the human condition.

In no literature or fiction is this conveyed any better then in the world of comics. Some bring you into a world shaped by the Ubermensch, the dreary and blood soaked streets of Jack The Ripper's London, or into the very depths of hell itself.

The power of allegory has the ability to change one's life, to help them understand the power of personal will, and with what symbols we channel that power into our world. So in a sense we become the empowered, the superheroes, the gifted in strength or intelligence if we suspend disbelief for a short time and allow ourselves to become enveloped in the world of comics.

Neil Gaiman has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Many of you will know him for work like Coraline but long before Gaiman essentially founded a legacy of comics drenched with Gothic obsessions and reference.

The Sandman introduces you to the King of Dreams. The character "Dream" is essentially a civil servant for creation. He regulates and maintains the dreams of all living creatures. He's a sad brooding type with a weakness for black clothing and heart break fueled revenge. His family consists of the concepts Death, Destiny, Desire, Despair, and Delirium as actual manifestations. His business dealings take him to Lucifer's domain and into forgotten dimensions.

I don't wish to say too much but that the content is rather dark. It's not reading for the timid as you'll be introduced to quite a bit of murder, sadomasochism, and sexual fetishes. That makes it the much richer though. Quite honestly this is one of those series that I'll re-read throughout my life.

Spin off series are highly suggested, the most noted being Lucifer.

If you don't know who Alan Moore is or you haven't seen or read any of his work you've probably not been on planet earth long. Moore is a modern pagan priest. No really, I think he actually is. Many describe him as a Gnostic but his love of Crowley and the occult is undeniable. It's referenced in almost ALL of his work and he has alot of fucking work. You've seen The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, Watchmen etc. Well don't just watch his stuff, read it! He still has a plethora of work that I hope will never be translated to film. The content of some is just too sacred to be brought to screen. The transformation process of discovering your inner God/Goddess isn't going to be done justice by Hollywood.

From Hell is my most recently new found love from Moore's twisted mind. Simple, it's about Jack The Ripper right? This isn't the Jack The Ripper you know. This is a Free Mason, a royal physician, and Theologian. This isn't a man who kills for shits and giggles(and believe me the murders look gruesome on paper). The most famous murderer of all time kills for empowerment, to maintain male dominance, to protect the Masonic brotherhood, to become God.

Y: The Last Man is what I've been currently reading. I love love love survival, apocalyptic, last man on earth stories. Basic premise is that a plague(thats up for debate) has wiped out all the males(human and animal) on Earth with the exception of a man by the name of "Yorick". He has to figure out 1. how to not be killed my roaming hordes of Amazons 2.how to find his girlfriend and repopulate the planet 3. and if there are any other men besides himself left.

Y shares more in common with the famous novel Earth Abides than it does with I am Legend but expect a fair bit more comedic relief. Regardless, the subject matter is intriguing. How exactly would women remodel the world?

Lace, Ruffles, High Collars

I've been delving into the idea of putting a Victorian inspired outfit together. Its been a bit of a hard undertaking considering I can't really try these pieces on. British fashion definitely still has enough Victorian and Edwardian influences left to make it something that won't be relegated to just costume.

Here are some items I've been looking at though:

The shirts haven't been too hard to come by. Considering a tux is essentially a remnant of that era I've been looking through thrift stores to find a good accompanying jacket. Something with tails preferably.

I highly recommend watching just about any Tim Burton film(Sleepy Hollow being one of the best), Interview with the Vampire, and reading Neil Gaiman's Lucifer series for good visualization of how these outfits actually looked on people.

In the meantime I've purchased this to make due for a bit of a simpler outfit. I've been frantically searching for a "gothy" bolo tie after seeing this Bauhaus photo.
